Letterman addresses controversial Palin joke

David Letterman, only two weeks into Conan O’Brien’s buzz about taking over The Tonight Show, has managed to smother those flames, and turn the attention back to himself. Two days ago Letterman’s infamous Top Ten segment focused on Sarah Palin’s visit to New York City. In the Top Ten contained a joke about her daughter getting “knocked up” by Alex Rodriguez. Palin went on to call Letterman pathetic, and she also put out an email statement on the issue:

“Laughter incited by sexually perverted comments made by a 62-year-old male celebrity aimed at a 14-year-old girl is not only disgusting, but it reminds us some Hollywood/N.Y. entertainers have a long way to go in understanding what the rest of America understands — that acceptance of inappropriate sexual comments about an underage girl, who could be anyone’s daughter, contributes to the atrociously high rate of sexual exploitation of minors by older men who use and abuse others.”

Last night, Letterman went on to defend himself. He says that they’re just jokes, so you can’t defend them. Furthermore, he also says that the jokes were not aimed at Willow, Palin’s 14-year-old daughter, but 18-year-old Bristol, who, as he put it, was “knocked up.” Here’s the video below, followed by my own commentary on the issue. In my opinion, Letterman handled the issue, fairly well. He’s been known to be rather brash and speak openly what’s on his mind, which often leads to belittling and attacking guests on his show. He could have gone a whole other way in his response. In the joke, it is not clarified what daughter the joke is steered to. However, I think it’s fair to assume that it is in fact Bristol. Palin had no problem parading Bristol around during the presidential campaign, throwing her to the media wolves and becoming a spokesperson for abstinence. It was Bristol, not Willow dominating the headlines during the campaign. Palin decided to bring the media attention to Bristol’s situation of being a pregnant teen, so she must realize that jokes are going to fly. I feel like Palin is up to using her daughters as much as possible for her political gain, but no one dare bring up the idea that she’s doing this, and you better not even think about poking fun about it. What’s left of this whole mess? A bunch of people taking a dumb joke way too seriously. Amidst all the controversy, what does CBS think? Well, No one’s talking about O’Brien anymore, so this issue has to be something of a victory for them.
